Kaplan Hecker & Fink Partner Joshua Matz was interviewed by PBS NewsHour in “Senate Dismisses Impeachment Articles Against DHS Secretary Mayorkas Before Trial Begins.”

On April 17, 2024, the Senate rejected both articles of impeachment against Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas, bringing a prompt conclusion to the trial initiated by the House of Representatives’ vote to impeach Mayorkas in February. The decision follows almost a year of hearings and investigations.

Kaplan Hecker & Fink LLP Partner Joshua Matz addressed the potential dangers associated with the impeachment articles on PBS NewsHour, explaining, “rather than alleging any kind of misconduct or malfeasance by Secretary Mayorkas, they really just amount to an incredibly wide-ranging policy disagreement over how this administration has handled immigration. And for centuries, it's been understood by scholars of every political persuasion that you simply can't impeach on that basis.”
