NEW YORK, NY, March 3, 2021 – Kaplan Hecker & Fink LLP announced today that partner Joshua Matz has returned to the firm following his tenure as Impeachment Counsel during the second Senate trial of former President Donald J. Trump. Matz had previously served among counsel to the House Judiciary Committee for the first impeachment and trial of President Trump.

Professor Larry Tribe of Harvard Law School recently described Matz as “the backbone of the legal efforts behind both impeachments.” Barry Berke, who served as Chief Impeachment Counsel for the second impeachment, told the National Law Journal that Matz is “phenomenal,” and “the most brilliant constitutional scholar [he has] ever worked with.”

“We could hardly be prouder of Joshua’s service to our nation and our democracy as counsel in both of the recent Trump impeachment proceedings,” said Roberta “Robbie” Kaplan, founding partner of Kaplan Hecker & Fink. “Joshua’s knowledge of our constitution, his elegant turn of phrase in briefs and at oral argument, and his strategic instincts are all awe-inspiring. We are so thrilled to have Joshua return to his role as the intellectual heavyweight of our firm’s expanding commercial, public interest and appellate litigation practices, a trusted advisor to our clients, and a leader of the bar.”

“It was a true honor to serve as Impeachment Counsel to the House Managers for this historic trial, and I am proud of the case that we presented to the Senate and the American people," said Matz. "And now I am thrilled to return to my extraordinary colleagues at Kaplan Hecker & Fink, where we have built a dynamic, creative, and cutting-edge practice that delivers exceptional results for our clients."
