On January 24, 2024, Kaplan Hecker & Fink LLP filed an amicus brief in Bentkowski v. City of New York and NYC Organization of Public Service Retirees, Inc. v. Campion on behalf of Physicians for a National Health Program, New York Metro Chapter (“PNHP”).

The brief, filed in support of retirees who dedicated their careers to public service for the City of New York, urges the First Department and the Court of Appeals, respectively, to consider how the City’s decision to force retirees onto an inferior health insurance plan would lead to worse health outcomes for retirees, impose administrative and mental burdens on physicians, and undermine the provision of healthcare in New York.

PNHP is a nonprofit membership organization of more than 25,000 physician members nationwide, many of whom are in New York City, who are dedicated to implementing a single-payer national health program.

The KHF team was led by associate Jackson Erpenbach and counsel Carmen Iguina González and included partners Julie Fink and Joshua Matz and case managers Alison Hurst and Hannah Charak.

The brief, which can be read here, reflects the firm’s commitment to advocating for fair access to quality healthcare.
